Puckheads Overpower Wolfpack in Late-Game Offensive Surge
If you showed up to the rink late on Monday night expecting a quiet, defensive chess match, you were looking in the wrong place. The Puckheads and the One Man Wolfpack treated the late-night crowd at the local barn to an 11-goal shootout, with the Puckheads eventually skating away with a 7-4 victory to move up the standings.
For the first two periods, it felt like a classic “who wants it less” affair. The Puckheads drew first blood when Cameron Sartin found the back of the net at the 2:25 mark of the opening frame, courtesy of a tidy feed from Jered Pieschke. But the Wolfpack refused to roll over. They clawed their way back in the second, with Alexander Hajduczok putting on a personal clinic. Hajduczok tallied twice, sandwiching a Michael Bergstrom goal to put the Wolfpack in the driver’s seat. By the time Richard Retkowski cut the lead to 3-2 for the Puckheads, the momentum felt like it was shifting toward the visitors.
Then came the third period, which can only be described as a complete defensive breakdown for the Wolfpack. The Puckheads decided they were done skating in circles and turned the final frame into a track meet.
Matthew Cooper proved to be the spark plug, notching a pair of goals—including an unassisted effort that clearly frustrated the Wolfpack bench. Gregory Douglas and Richard Retkowski piled on in quick succession, turning a tight game into a runaway train. By the time Brandt Mueller took a seat for two minutes for roughing, the Wolfpack’s composure had fully evaporated. Cameron Sartin took immediate advantage of the man-advantage, hammering home his second of the night at 6:55.
“We just decided to stop overthinking it and started putting pucks on the net,” said one Puckheads player, who preferred to remain anonymous but notably looked like he hadn’t slept since 2014. “Whatever they were doing in that second period, we made sure to stop doing it in the third.”
To their credit, the Wolfpack kept the scoreline respectable late, with Brandt Mueller converting a pass from Hajduczok to round out the scoring at 7-4. But the deficit was far too deep to overcome by that point.
The win provides a much-needed morale boost for the Puckheads, who have struggled with consistency early in the season. For the One Man Wolfpack, the loss keeps them stuck in the basement of the standings. If they want to climb out of that hole, they’re going to need to figure out how to play defense for more than thirty minutes at a time. As for the Puckheads, they’ll look to keep this offensive momentum rolling, provided they can find a way to stay out of the penalty box and keep their heads on straight for the next outing.
