Renegades Outlast Tornadoes in 15-Goal Offensive Frenzy

If you brought a spreadsheet to the rink on Tuesday night hoping to track a defensive masterclass, you were undoubtedly disappointed. If you brought a scorecard and a sharp pencil, however, you likely ran out of lead. In an 8-7 shootout that defied the laws of probability and basic goaltending safety, the Renegades edged out the Tornadoes, proving that in this league, the best defense is sometimes just scoring one more goal than the other guy.

The Renegades entered the contest looking to break a stagnant 1-1-1 record, and they wasted little time setting the tempo. Joseph Pachuta was the early architect of chaos, potting two goals in the first period to put the Tornadoes on their heels. While the Tornadoes managed to stay within striking distance thanks to first-period goals from Christopher Gardner and Derek Smith, the Renegades’ ability to generate offense off the rush—highlighted by Alex Bateman’s unassisted effort at the 12:42 mark—was the difference-maker.

The middle frame was where the game truly descended into a high-octane track meet. The teams traded chances with reckless abandon, but the Renegades effectively stretched their lead with a three-goal burst. Alex Bateman continued his dominant form, extending his personal point streak with his second goal of the night, while Dominic Najjar and the mysterious “Not Signed In” added crucial insurance markers. By the time the second period buzzer sounded, the scoreboard looked more like a grocery bill than a hockey tally.

The Tornadoes, showing the resilience of a team that has lived in the overtime column all season, refused to fold in the third. Brendan Budnik and Gregory Douglas provided a late-game surge, and Derek Smith’s second goal of the night at the 8:16 mark threatened to steal the momentum entirely. However, just 35 seconds after Smith’s strike, Alex Bateman completed his hat trick—a performance assisted twice by Michael Pasque—which proved to be the decisive blow. A late goal by “Not Signed In” provided just enough breathing room to withstand a frantic final push from the Tornadoes.

“We aren’t trying to make our goalie’s life this difficult, I promise,” said a breathless Renegades skater after the final whistle. “But when the puck is finding the back of the net like that, you just stop checking the watch and start counting the goals.”

For the Renegades, the victory is a massive step forward, moving them to 2-1-1 and providing a much-needed boost in the standings. The Tornadoes, meanwhile, fall to 0-2-3. While their inability to close out the win will surely be a point of frustration for their bench, their ability to hang seven goals on the board shows that their offense is more than capable of competing.

Tonight’s game was an analytical nightmare but a fan’s dream. It wasn’t pretty, it wasn’t textbook, and it certainly wasn’t a clinic on backchecking. But in a league where parity is the name of the game, the Renegades will take the two points—regardless of how much red ink it took to write them down.
